Room 13 Foshay, Los Angeles… The Heart of Art …is a student/adult managed & financed, self-sustaining, multi-media studio. We are part of Room 13 International which includes over 80 studios around the world. Who We Are: 170+ student artists (ages 10-18) at Foshay, a public school in South Central Los Angeles. We share a multi-media studio with a professional fine artist (Kathia Dungplata) that we hired to be our Artist-in-Residence. We also are D.I.Y. businesspeople who run and finance the studio. We are artists who represent the Los Angeles of today – young, bold, expressive, inclusive, multi-racial, creative. We are accomplished public representatives, not afraid to interact with people, artists and companies of all shapes and sizes. What We Do: Raise money to pay for our supplies and our Artist-in-Residence, especially through our art and designs. Act as an incubator for original, creative learning and problem solving. A place where professional artists can inspire and mentor young artists while at the same time getting re-energized by the young artists’ creativity. A model for art programs in the time of reduced funding. What We Want: Continue to involve more artists, and businesses, from Los Angeles and around the world, in collaborations to raise money and awareness. We want them to take advantage of the opportunity to inspire, mentor and create with us. Also we want to share the Room 13 model with other school’s and artists to join us in building the network of collaborative studios. Introducing Room 13

Originally from Fort William, Scotland, Room 13 is an arts program initiated by the students for the students. It was created by a group of elementary children who felt like their school should have a space that allows students to express themselves through art and other creative means.

Room 13 is a student-run studio that is completely self-sustainable, relaying on its participants to raise money and fund their classroom activities. The social enterprise teaches basic business practices and requires students to come together and create a budget and business model in order to fund their initiatives.

Included in the students business plan is the need to fund the salary of a resident artist. This artist uses the Room 13 studio as their own and the students learn and create with the artist.

James Foshay Learning Center is the first Room 13 in the United States, chosen for its unique character and self-driven student body. Located in South Los Angeles, the school is located in the center of one of the richest cities which offers resources including: art museums, art schools, research universities and major film studios.

There are more than 35 studios worldwide. Each studio is filled with ambition, leadership and the desire to create art in a collective movement of self-expression.

"Africa" By Martha Cabrera

I personally like this photograph because to me it seems like the water that is spilled on the floor has the shape of Africa. Also, I think it is really funny. To me its really funny because it looks like if i had an accident. Haha.

"Torture" By Martha Cabrera

To me this picture says that littering is a problem at schools. After kids finish eating lunch they do not throw their trash in the garbage can. As you can see all the trash is on the floor and the trash can is right beside it. I titled this image "torture" because maintenance engineers may think of this as torture because they are the ones who have to clean it up.

To me this photograph looks like a huge cloud falling out of the sky. I see it as if the colored parts is pollution. To me this means that we already have many dark clouds to the pollution we are creating and also all the paper we waste daily.

I took this picture while I was in an empty lunch area. There was three fountains and I focused on one of them, the others are not visible due the backgound of the picture being blurry. The background looks like it can be just about anything, which is a reason why I really like this picture. Another reason why I really like this image is because you can see the detail of the fountain and as part of a detail you can even see a crack thats inside of it.

"Art Out Of Art" by Martha Cabrera

I took this picture in a room next to Room 13 where there is a sink to wash the palettes and brushes. I really like the lighting and the fact that after everyone finishes painting they leave the dirty brushes and palettes scattered in the sink so someone can wash them. It is a favorite because it shows the color other people used to paint and the cups they used for water and also the different kinds of brushes they used.

The image above was taken when Francisca Pascual (right) was telling a story to Timoi(left,Artist in Residence) the story was about a palm tree getting pulled out by a big crane. Which would explain why her arms are extended to the sides. The tape on Francisca's sweater says "Hello My Name Is Jimmy". I took this picture because her hand gestures look very interesting to me.

All of the merchandise were created by the students. From the concept phase to marketing, Room 13 artist worked together to create products that represent the creativity that is exhibited in the classroom.

By purchasing products from Room 13, you are contributing the the program's budget. The students will use the money to pay for art supply and the salary of the class's resident artist.

Most importantly, you are facilitating an environment for creative freedom within the LAUSD school.

Room 13: A Business

Several times a week at Foshay students sell snacks, slushies and pizza after school as students rush from their classes and grab a bite to eat before they get home.

While other students are free for the day, Room 13's artists stay behind to clean up their sales booth and count the day's earnings. Making anywhere from $75-$150 in profit from sales, participants use the sales as a main resource for funding for their class.

Each Sunday, the Hollywood Farmer's Market is a sea of tents, offering the public some of the freshest fruits, produce, ethnic dishes and refreshing drinks.

However Room 13's tent serves up something different: fresh talent. T-shirts, tote bags, post cards and original artwork are sold to fund the art program-- raising money for art supplies and other classroom needs.

In April, the class made it's third appearance at the outdoor market where they encouraged people to join them in face painting and creating art out of recycled goods. Students, parents and art enthusists came together to support the mission of Room 13.

F156 is the classroom where Room 13 is located at Foshay. Students work on a variety of different projects and use medium such as acrylic paint, chalk pastel, graphite and spray paint to create their artwork.

Utilizing their creative sides, students often use household items such as soda cans and duck tap to create their artwork.

The resident artist, Timoi, also introduces new media to Room 13 participants and together their experiment.

They focus on creating work that is environmentally friendly--by recycling and producing work that comments on human interaction with the Earth.

Journalists

In addition to the artists in Room 13, there are several students in each class that are journalists and work to properly represent the program to those who are unfamiliar with the composition of a Room 13.

The journalists interview their classmates and report on the progress of the class. In the nature of Room 13, the students decide what they are interested in and the teacher finds an expert in the field to help facilitate learning--feeding their curiousity and allowing intellectual growth.

"Room 13"

An Essay by Jorge Guzman

If you are in America, you can find Room 13. For me, Room 13 is a program where young students/artists are able to express themselves by their art. When I walk in my school on James Foshay Learning Center by room F156, I could see Room 13's door, with a cool, colorful, and expressive painting made by a famous artist. When I walk inside the room, I see all the cool paintings in the wall made by young artists and me. You could also smell the nacho cheese while it is being heated [for the after school sale]. You could also see the young artist doing their new piece of art.

Foshay is made up of students from all over the world. Some students come from all over the United States, Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, and even students from China, Korea, and Japan. In Foshay, a lot of people do not get along with each other. Sometimes they get from pushing each other to getting into fights. When students that come all over the world get to go to Room 13, everything changes. There, everyone gets along with each other. There everyone shares their ideas with everyone by their art--expressing their feelings and thoughts.

One example of this happened between Maria Padilla, Jose Perdomo, and me, Jorge Guzman. they all come from different places. Maria, a nice, intelligent, and good looking girl comes from Mexico. Jose, a very funny guy, comes from El Salvador. Finally me, a person who likes math, who was born in Los Angels, but rase in Mexico. All of us came to be good friends. Everyone in Room 13 gets along. Everyone shares their ideas and thoughts and make a differences with all the others students from the school.

Jorge Guzman

Jorge Guzman is a contributing journalist to Room 13 online reports.

Born in the U.S., Jorge was raised in Mexico and came to the United States three years ago when he was 10 years old.

He's attended Foshay since then and is now in the 7th grade participating in Room 13 as an artist, reporter and treasurer. He is interested in pursuing many careers, including architecture, computer engineering and professional soccer. He is confident that Room 13 will help him with all of his goals.

These pictures were taken by Kenia Coyoy. One of her hobbies is photographing random pictures with her digital camera. Her cousin Adela Milagros posed for some photos but the rest were taken from random people Kenia meets. She takes pictures with a normal digital camera but "perfects" them with Photoshop.
